Designer Hanna-Kaarina Heikkilä

I’m an enthusiastic glass collector and love flea markets. But even more so, I love to draw inspiration from old things and add a modern twist to them ⎼ so designing SÄLLSKAPLIG glassware was something of a dream project. The shapes and expressions in the series are reminiscent of old times and are perfect for a traditional table setting, but can also be used in new and creative ways. Not least, it is perfect for adding a little luxury to life, maybe on an ordinary Monday!

A more festive everyday with SÄLLSKAPLIG

When we created SÄLLSKAPLIG we wanted to make glass that can add a silver lining to the everyday. The inspiration comes from the kind of glass you can find in flea markets. It’s the best of the good old times with a modern twist – a mix of organic shapes and geometric patterns that easily can be combined with the tableware you already have at home.

What is glass?

Glass is mainly made of sand, soda and lime melted at a high temperature. Tempering or various additives gives you extra-strong and impact-resistant glass that in some cases can be taken straight from freezer to oven without cracking. A big benefit is how glass can be recycled over and over without the quality deteriorating. Also, a lot less energy is needed to melt recycled glass compared to new raw materials. Our goal is to eventually use only recycled glass in our range.

Having led a footloose and fancy-free life for a while, this mother and daughter wanted to make their latest move more intentional. Many mood boards, colour swatches and budget spreadsheets later, here's where they've landed: in a cosy and curated farmhouse-style cottage, where the memories they've picked up along their many adventures are displayed for all to see.

The heart and soul of every home
The heart and soul of every home

This episode of "Home idea with IKEA" takes us to a home of a dancer Beāte who is just as passionate about interior as she is about dance. She says that interior is like a choreography - an interior well executed likens a harmonious dance. The apartment, inherited from her grandmother, has been designed with much care and love, allowing Beāte's love for all things retro to show. However, the kitchen has proved the hardest part, still sporting some 90's charm but without the functionality and comfort that the heart of each home deserves. IKEA interior designer Valērija will need all of her skill to transform this kitchen into a modern haven with a homey retro charm.

“Home idea with IKEA”: several generations under one roof
“Home idea with IKEA”: several generations under one roof

It often happens that life and family situations change and several generations find themselves living under one roof. This is the case in the Eglītis family, where the grandmother, is welcomed to live in the family home of Gunta. Although the house is spacious, the family has not managed to furnish a separate room: there is a room, but it has served mostly as a storage room, and it has not been freed from clutter to create a cosy living space for the grandmother.

SÄLLSKAPLIG glass
Story

A more festive everyday with SÄLLSKAPLIG

Do you long for Sunday dinners at your grandmother’s or just love old, beautiful glass? With SÄLLSKAPLIG you can recreate the best of the good old times in your own home. The designer Hanna-Kaarina Heikkilä, was inspired by yesterday’s traditional glassware when she created the patterns and shapes in the SÄLLSKAPLIG series.

Hanna-Kaarina is an enthusiastic glass collector. “I love glass from different eras and places. For SÄLLSKAPLIG I was inspired by the glassware you can find in dusty old flea markets,” she says.

Feeling of weekend during the workweek

Glass has been a part of our history for thousands of years – as everyday objects, but also as something that is used only on special occasions. This difference is something Hanna-Kaarina would like to erase. “Setting a table shouldn’t be so serious, it should be fun. Sometimes you just want to add a silver lining to a regular Monday morning. By drinking juice from a tall wine glass, you can make the beginning of the week feel more like the start of the weekend.“

Mix to match

“To me, glass is a valuable material. I think it’s fascinating that you can transform a simple matter like sand into beautiful and useful objects and shapes. I also like that glass is sustainable since it can be recycled in a never-ending loop,” says Hanna-Kaarina. All the glasses, bowls and carafes in the SÄLLSKAPLIG series speak the same language but have a strong character on their own. With the different heights you can create a billowy glass landscape on the table. “It’s a mix of organic shapes and geometric patterns that can be combined with tableware you already have at home. I hope SÄLLSKAPLIG inspires to new ideas for the set table and perhaps more festive everydays.”
