The 11th season of Home Idea with IKEA begins with a special episode, featuring the transformation of several rooms at the Burtnieks crisis centre. For the fifth year in a row, IKEA volunteers are helping to create spaces where people can take their first steps towards safety, providing interiors that help residents feel at home. This time, IKEA is redesigning two family rooms and a psychologist’s office. For the IKEA interior designer, it is essential to create spaces that not only refresh the environment but also bring a sense of warmth and security.

Before

The crisis centre rooms are bright and functional, yet visually outdated. The yellow walls are in need of refreshing, the floors are bare and monotonous, and the furniture lacks cohesion. The layout is not suited to a modern lifestyle, and there is a lack of unity, cosiness and aesthetic appeal. The colour palette is monotonous, lighting fails to highlight the rooms’ potential, and storage solutions are insufficient, creating a clear need for professional interior redesign. There are three rooms in total, and while the task is not simple, it is achievable with careful planning.

After: psychologist's workspace

After the interior makeover, the psychologist’s office has become calm, warm and professional. Natural tones, green accents and thoughtfully designed lighting create a safe and trustworthy atmosphere for open, soul-healing conversations. IKEA storage solutions from the IVAR range help maintain order, while comfortable chairs and a sofa provide comfort for both individual consultations and family sessions. The space now supports both work and emotional wellbeing, creating a harmonious environment where people can feel heard, calm and safe.

After: a family room for a family with a baby

After the interior makeover, the family room for a family with a baby has become calm, safe and practical for everyday life. The rich blue wall colour is soothing, while yellow accents add warmth and a sense of joy. IKEA furniture helps create clear zoning for relaxation, play and baby care. The space is thoughtfully designed to be comfortable for adults while providing a safe and cosy environment for the baby to grow.

After: a family room

After the interior makeover, this family room is suitable for both younger and older children. Calm green tones create a sense of balance, while yellow accents add energy. An IKEA bunk bed, storage solutions and a comfortable workspace allow the whole family to feel at ease in the room. Clear zoning provides space for play, study and relaxation, creating a functional and cosy environment where everyone can find their own place.

“When an entire family needs to share one room, it is essential to plan the space so that there is truly enough room and everyone can feel comfortable. This can be achieved with multifunctional furniture, such as beds that can be joined together or used separately, as well as, of course, clear zoning.”

Previous makeovers

One step closer to safety – together

IKEA co-workers volunteered in the renovation of the crisis centre rooms, contributing their time, knowledge and care to create spaces for new beginnings. Together, they created a safe, cosy and functional environment for families who need it most. These rooms help restore calm, stability and hope at a time when it is needed most.

Are your eyes wide open? Join us in the movement.

Every fourth woman in the Baltics has experienced domestic violence at least once in her life. To raise public awareness, we implement the “Notice violence” innitiative as a commitment to fight the domestic violence in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

About the initiative

Turning shelter into home

We believe that home, even the temporary one, has to be a safe and comfortable place. To improve the living conditions of the families affected by the domestic violence, we have done a series of makeovers at crisis centres in "Mīlgrāvis" and “Burtnieks”.
