Every year, more than 230 people turn to the largest crisis centre in Riga, called "Burtnieks", for help in the most painful moments of their lives. After 12 years of continuous operation, the premises were outdated, but after the latest renovation works this spring, almost half of the premises have become more cosy for anyone seeking shelter and support.

Before the makeover

The Crisis Centre is in its third year of transformation. Almost half of the space, more than 400 m², has been renovated. Previously, we renovated a group activity room, a children's playroom, a children's bathroom, two large shared kitchens and three family rooms. This year, the focus was on four more family rooms and a spacious multi-purpose room for parties, group sessions and individual counselling.

After the makeover

We designed the rooms based on the experience of the crisis centre team and the families. We focused not only on functionality, but also on creating a calming atmosphere. We used warm, neutral tones and natural materials, because surroundings can really improve one's wellbeing and allow to rejuvenate.

General vibe: peace and security

Knowing how important it is to create an environment where people feel safe and calm, we chose earthy, warm neutral tones, natural materials and textures. In the multifunctional area, we emphasised the theme of the sea, as it symbolises spaciousness and freedom. In the family rooms, it was important to create a pleasant atmosphere of nature and forest. The pine beds and wooden accents provide both functionality and connection to nature.

More space for sweet dreams

Compact, multifunctional furniture such as bunk beds with storage, sofabeds and adjustable chairs allowed the space to remain flexible. It was important to use durable furniture that was easy to move and materials that were easy to care for. The new layouts significantly increased the number of sleeping spaces and storage options, creating a more comfortable and functional environment.

Smart storage solutions

The biggest challenge was to make the most of the limited space while meeting many different needs. We achieved this with carefully considered furniture layouts, multifunctional solutions and a wardrobe system that allows to store as many things as possible: outerwear, seasonal clothes, household essentials, etc.

Space for everything

To balance practical needs with the aesthetic, we paid attention to the functionality of each element, while keeping the space harmonious and peaceful. It was very important to give the possibility to maintain order and to store as many items as possible in the wardrobes. Shelves, trolleys and other small storage solutions ensured that each thing would have its own place and that the room would not become cluttered.

Great support by volunteers

IKEA employees played a key role in the transformation, volunteering their time, furnishing the rooms, assembling the furniture and working together to make the crisis centre a truly home-like place for families.
