During restrictions due to pandemic, people more frequently prepared meals at home and according to the IKEA research “Life at home” 37 % of respondents are happy about this shift and are planning to continue doing it more in the future. Combining cooking and full-time work at the home office can be challenging, therefore food blogger and author of cookbooks Zane Grēviņa suggests an action plan.
Make a weekly meal plan
Planning meals gives many benefits – it saves time and money and helps reducing food waste. When planning meals for the next week, think of the products you already have at home. Another way to start planning is promotional leaflets of the grocery store – pick some main products what are on promotion and plan other choices accordingly. Zane likes recipes where the same product can be used for more than one dish.
Pre-cook your meals
Don't let the busy lifestyle stay in the way of healthy nutrition of your family. Zane advices having pre-cooked good quality meals that can be easily heated up on busy days. Cherry tomatoes, paprika, cucumbers and fresh salad mix will always make the meal fresher. For kids it’s handy keeping peeled and sliced carrots or other vegetables in the fridge so they can snack on something healthy. Many dishes like lasagna, soup or meat can be fully prepared in advance, and you can also grind the cheese, cut vegetables and mushrooms or boil quinoa.
Keep the food organized and easy to overlook
Maintain order in the fridge, making sure that products are visible, so that they would not be forgotten. Zane recommends keeping meat, vegetables, eggs and other products in the specially designated place – preserving the crunchy freshness for longer. Try keeping dishes meant for upcoming day in the front part of the fridge, making it the first choice for the starving family members hypnotising the content of the fridge. Zane's biggest helpers in organising the fridge are transparent glass containers, which are oven- and microwave-safe.
Recipes
If you work or study from home, you will definitely need food. Don't let the busy days be a reason to spend a day without healthy and nutritious meals and snacks. Zane Grēviņa suggests two easy and quick recipes. Enjoy!
