Timeless classic: a black and white interior

Black and white never goes out of fashion, right? IKEA Interior Designer Agita knows this better than anyone. In this episode, follow the transformation of a very simple teenager room that emerges as a true eye-catcher. Following the vision of the Designer, this interior draws its inspiration from the preferences and character of its inhabitant. 15-year-old Daniela possesses all the drive and energy of a young athlete, but still needs a place to relax and recharge. This room is her weekend haven but has long been in dire need of renovation.

In need of a makeover. Period.

This room is at an apartment where Daniela spends her weekends. During the week, she lives in the dorms of her school. She says her two passions are sports and fashion, but nothing of that shows in this stark interior with only the indispensable furniture and some spare stuff that belongs to other family members. Not much thought and love has gone into planning this room, but this is about to change in the hands of an Interior Designer.

Looking for inspiration? Tip of an artist: look inwards

Interior design is a form of art and every work of art begins with an inspiration. Agita brings Daniela to experience a face-painting and relaxation adventure in the studio of Linda Īstenā who believes that the inner peace and inspiration is only to be found if one lets themselves go. She turns Daniela into a work of art and gives her much needed moments of pure resting.

The beauty of monochromy

To get the feel of what Daniela would like to see in her new room, Agita invites her to IKEA for another experience: the creation of a moodboard that serves as a guide for the makeover. Daniela is drawn by magical black and white contrasts but admits having a weak spot for pastels too. Agita suggests to soften the monochromy with some shades of grey, light blue and pink to make the interior more inviting.

Timeless meets modern

The new interior is an ode to the iconic contrast of black and white and a modern take on this timeless classic. Agita has taken a rather simple approach according to the principle that less is more. When there are just a few pieces of furniture, those have to be chosen with great care, thinking not only about colour but about texture as well. Combining smooth matte surfaces, soft textiles and a huge mirror as accent gives the room the personality it needs.

Storage hacks

It often happens, that people think – if they put a spacious wardrobe in a bedroom, that will cover for all the storage needs. Actually, some additional storage is always a great idea. Here, Agita has added a small tray table that can be used as a bedside table or a snack table when friends come over. On the wall at the footboard of the bed the main role is played by some picture ledges, where the decoration can be changed as often as one likes.
 

A girl's dream

Remembering about Daniela's interest in fashion, it was clear, that a spacious wardrobe is a must. Agita has created a combination that adapts to different storage needs and is big enough to accommodate a lot of clothes and shoes. Underneath, there is a small desk for the times when Daniela has some work to do.
