What is rattan?

Rattan is a strong yet lightweight and flexible material made from the rattan plant’s stem. It can be used both whole and split into thinner materials that are braided into things like furniture and baskets. Rattan belongs to the palm family and climbs along trees, though no trees are required to be felled when the rattan cane is harvested. Since it is a natural material and the products are often handmade by skilled craftspeople, each object gets a completely unique look.

Ideas and inspiration

It’s all about the storage
It’s all about the storage

Close-at-hand storage where you need it, show-off storage where you love it, and closed storage where you want it – all while keeping things organised and divided so that every family member has their own, dedicated bathroom space.

5 ideas for tiny home workplace
5 ideas for tiny home workplace

IKEA survey “Life at Home”* shows that every fourth of Latvia’s citizens would like to create or improve their workspace at home, based on life at home experience during the lockdown measures. The good news is, according to IKEA interior designer, it is not necessary to redesign the entire home in order to have such a spot – you can create a comfortable place for work or studies in forgotten and unused spaces at home.

Step-by-step: say hello to the farmhouse look in your hallway
Step-by-step: say hello to the farmhouse look in your hallway

Ah, the hallway. Often too small or narrow for bigger pieces of furniture, it frequently becomes the “we-don't-really-know-where-to-put-this-thing” place in the home. But there is no reason to underutilise this handy spot. Take a look at this hallway and see how to transform yours into a functional – and might we add, stylish – welcome into your home.

Ask a designer: modern farmhouse on a budget
Ask a designer: modern farmhouse on a budget

“I love the modern farmhouse look but I don’t know how to create this look in my own home, let alone on a budget. Where do I begin?” Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. Interior designer Hans Blomquist is a seasoned pro when it comes to the modern farmhouse style, showing how achievable it can be to integrate this look into any home, and affordably too.

Time for something new
Time for something new

Having led a footloose and fancy-free life for a while, this mother and daughter wanted to make their latest move more intentional. Many mood boards, colour swatches and budget spreadsheets later, here's where they've landed: in a cosy and curated farmhouse-style cottage, where the memories they've picked up along their many adventures are displayed for all to see.

Let there be order: living room and home office
Let there be order: living room and home office

How do you express yourself at home: maximalist, minimalist or somewhere in-between? We know that order is personal, so let’s make sure your space feels uniquely yours. Why not start it with bringing your own kind of order to the living room and home office?

In the minds of IKEA designers
In the minds of IKEA designers

Every item in the IKEA range starts out the same way: as the brainchild of a talented designer, brought to life by a bigger team of developers, engineers, manufacturers and more, before finding its way into stores as a finished product. What thoughts and considerations went into some of our most-loved products? Well, the best way to find out is to ask!

There’s fun for everyone in this bright family room
There’s fun for everyone in this bright family room

Not even a gloomy weather forecast can put an end to the fun and creativity with a family room like this one. Highlights include the big, comfy sofa at its centre (with removable covers, no less), family-friendly storage, and activity corners for creating and playing.

The power of nature: an orangery and a kitchen in one
The power of nature: an orangery and a kitchen in one

What is the most unusual room IKEA interior designers have worked with in "Home idea with IKEA"? From bedrooms to studios, to a tree house: every project has had its own challenges. Still, there has never been a room as unusual as this one. It is a kitchen and an orangery in one and an activity hub for the whole family. IKEA interior designer Katrīne will need all of her skill to make change happen in this space: a room where plant-lover Margita lets her passion free rein.

Bringing Christmas vibe to work
Bringing Christmas vibe to work

Work is often referred to as the second home and the colleagues – as the second family. Therefore, yourwork space also deserves to be dressed up for Christmas so that both co-workers and visitors can enjoy the festive mood. This year, IKEA Business decided to bring the Christmas vibe to 3 different businesses.

IKEA Business Interior Designers Linda Ribaka-Orlova and Auce Graudiņa are sure that the premises of a business are a reflection of its identity and Christmas is the time when warmth and personality can be shown. Decorating the workplace together can also be a great bonding opportunity for the whole team that makes everybody think outside the box and offers a way to forget the everyday work for a little while.
