Primary school teacher Agita lives together with two young sons and for her, days are always too short with the many responsibilities and hobbies. IKEA makeover will transform a room with many different functions. Agita says this room is her beauty parlour, wardrobe, workspace, library and storage room. During the home-schooling period in the spring she decided that it is time to change something. She would very much like for the room to be functional, to have enough space for all the many things and to be cosy and comfortable for the moments of rest.

The trials of fitting many functions in one room
Before the makeover, all the furniture in the room was been placed around the perimeter, without using the full potential of walls, for example. IKEA Interior Designer Kristīne notices that the placement of the bed is not very fortunate because of possible draughts from the window and heating that is directly by the head. Another problem is the great amount of stuff. Even though it is organised, it just seems too much. Kristīne says that organising with boxes is great but one has to be careful with the design. If the boxes are many and tend to be dark, the overall impression can become overwhelming.
When layout is everything
The first big step of the makeover is planning the layout. This time, Designer Kristīne has decided to go bold and to divide the room with some lightweight shelf combinations. Thus, there are two big zones. One is for resting and for sleeping and the other for work, hobbies and beauty care. Zoning is emphasized by different lighting, using a more calming and intimate lights in the bedroom part and more intensive light in the work zone. In rooms with several functions it is very important to introduce some smart lighting solutions and to ensure a good general lighting (this is usually a ceiling or a pendant lamp) and work lighting like here at the desk and at the shelf that doubles as a dressing table. An adjustable lamp above the desk is great as it can be moved up or down depending on what is needed.

A curtain with a meaning
IKEA Interior Designer Kristīne emphasizes the importance of textiles in interior. Curtains, throws and pillows make room cosier and dampen sounds. A room like this one benefits from a partly sheer curtain that creates softer image and gives an opportunity to create some privacy. By closing the curtain, you almost create a separate room. For other family members, this can be an indication. If the curtain is closed, it means that the owner would like to rest and should not be disturbed.
Play with lights to enchance mood
We all know it is essential to have good lighting for the work, but it should not be neglected in the rest zone either. Kristīne has chosen a natural material pendant lamp that creates a unique pattern of light and dark on the walls. The effect is made even bolder by the mirror that enhances the light and  serves as an accent. For a better comfort while reading in bed, there is an additional wall lamp with focused light.
A positive start in the day
Everyday life gets easier if there is at least a small corner at the door where you can ad the last touches to your image and take a look in the mirror. Here, there is a clothes rail and a memo board with clips for important messages or just dear memories and childrens' drawings. This corner is made special by the footstool made of natural material. It has storage and is nice to sit on while putting on shoes.
All in place for an efficient work
When planning space for work, the Designer took extra care to make it extra multifunctional, e.g., by choosing a desk with castors. A workplace has to be efficient, so everything has been put close at hand. Even the waste sorting bins are placed within arms' reach. As it's a teachers' room, there is often paper waste and it is important to sort those to lessen the impact on nature.

Modern is mobile
Modern lifestyle is very dynamic and even furniture has to keep up with it. A desk with castors is as modern as it is multifunctional. It can go from work desk to board games arena, a crafts paradise or even a dining table in one go. The solution is made even more practical by keeping all the necessary things close by and choosing an adjustable lamp that can be pulled down or moved up.
The kingdom of small
When renovating or creating a new interior it is easy to forget the importance of keeping even the smallest things in good order. As a rule, there are always more of those than you think. Wall storage solutions are great as they give a good overview and everything is within reach. Use a pegboard combination with different accessories for your things and you'll notice how much easier it is to keep everything in order!
