A new season of "Home Idea with IKEA" has started! In the kick-off episode IKEA Designer Ieva faces a most challenging task – a makeover in a room for both children and young adults to feel good, to spend time alone or together, to read and to play games. Limbaži Special school breaks stereotypes about special education schools. The headmistress accents the great attitude of children and parents as well as the enormous patience of teachers. She is convinced that the atmosphere in the school is far cry from what one would think to have in a boarding school. "Home Idea with IKEA" comes up with great ideas for the room where children can have some peace, read magazines or play board games.

The soul is in the details
About two years ago, a new management team started work at the school and since then there have already been many changes. This room, once a comfortless space without any nice furniture, has been renovated as good as possible, but there is still something missing. It seems as if the bubbly spirit of people here has not managed to reflect itself on this interior and it lacks the power of attraction to make children want to spend more time here. Children who live in the school during the week admit spending more time in their private rooms as this one does not convey a feeling of relaxation. They wish more colour and more private corners for talking with friends.
Adding character – bold colours for a bold mood
When planning a room for children and young adults, it is worth to be daring and to think outside the tradition. Who said the ceiling always has to be white? If a room has lots of light, ceiling can become a colourful and stylish accent and support the visual impression of different zones within this room. Versatile storage solutions are a must in almost every room and can be used in different ways. There is no reason to shy away from displaying your favourite things on open shelves that can be an accent or a neutral background, whichever you choose. Other things can be hidden in closed cabinets or in pull-out boxes.
Learn. Have fun. Relax. Repeat
In rooms that are used by more than a few people at a time, it is crucial to think about comfortable planning in terms of lighting as well. Here, several pendant lamps have been used to create a homey circle of light above each table. Window decoration includes both blinds and curtains for a cosier feel. IKEA Interior Designer Ieva says textiles are what creates a more intimate and more individual atmosphere and they are easy to change to refresh the room without paying much.
Designer tips for an efficient and relaxing interior
Interior Designer Ieva says multifunctionality has become one of the focal trends in interior design in 2020. Many people live in small apartments and multifunctional furniture is what helps to declutter and have a more spacious feel. A few carefully chosen things can become best companions when trying to keep everything in order. Designer reminds that zoning can also help to use the available space in a more clever way. A special tip is to include sustainable solutions like garbage sorting and plant growing station to purify air.
One room and… how many functions?
Zone with care and you can fit very many functions in one room! Here, there is a comfy movie corner with a sofa and an armchair that is marked by a colourful rug, a chill zone with some nice beanbags and a creative zone for attaching pictures, information or write a wish for friends. A modern accent – garbage sorting station that is both sustainable and educational and a plant growing space above it.
