In a small 2-room apartment in Riga, lives a happy couple, married for 33 years already. Their sons are already away from home, and the couple has three grandchildren. The small ones have given a renewed sense of purpose and the couple is determined to help their children to raise them so they pay more attention to their health and try to stay fit. As in life, they would like to see changes also in their everyday environment. The task will not be easy for IKEA interior designer, as the room has to fulfil more than one function. There has to be place for resting, place for a yoga mat to exercise and place for visiting grandchildren. A place for overnight guests is also a must.
Layout is everything
The room was renovated some 14 years ago and the owners did most of the things themselves. The biggest asset is the wooden floor. That's something the owners would definitely like to keep. The most challenging feature in this room is the layout. The room is spacious enough, but long and narrow ‒ an impression emphasized by the furniture that's arranged by the two longer walls.
Storage, storage…
As the grandchildren visit often, there are quite a lot of toys and other things needed for quality time with the small ones. At one end of the room, there is a spacious storage combination that is still not enough for everything. The couple would like to have as much closed storage solutions as possible so as not to have to spend time cleaning.
Solving the puzzle
After the makeover, the room seems much more airy and spacious. The walls have been painted white to make them retreat visually and the white furniture blends in with the walls. No pieces of furniture have plinth, so they seem airier and don't seem too massive for the given space. An area rug divides the room, stating clearly, where the resting zone is.
Lighting for every day and for special occasions
In this room, many different kinds of lighting have been used. A ceiling lamp gives good general lighting, while two different floor lamps and a round, bubble-like table lamp provide task and mood lighting. Additionally, there is also built-in light in one of the cabinets, creating a nice background for memorabilia, and an extra lamp for the painting above the sofa.
For all the different occasions
The transformed interior is easily adjusted for different needs. There is a sofa-bed that converts from a comfy couch into a spacious bed for two. In front of the couch, there is a light table that can be pushed to side when not needed. A small table with stools for children has found place beneath a spacious cabinet for many things. When the grandchildren are not there, everything can be quickly stored away until the next time.
Combined storage for all needs
At one end of the room, there is a storage combination that holds it all ‒ yoga mat and other bigger things as well as all the small things that otherwise tend to make rooms seem cluttered but are nevertheless needed. In drawers everything can be kept in order (or not) and is close at hand when it's needed. The built-in lighting in a glass-door cabinet is suitable as mood lighting as well and creates a cosy atmosphere.
