When three children share one room, finding the right interior solutions can be challenging. This time, "Home idea with IKEA" visits Annija, a mother of three for whom the visit is a surprise, organised by her own mother. Annija admits she is very happy to have been chosen as a participant as she struggles with the planning of her children's room. IKEA Interior Designer Zane is determined to make the everyday life for Annija's family better. What will be her best tips & tricks?

Before: the are minimum of essentials

The children's room is quite spacious and light which is a great base for an interior. However, Annija has not yet managed to plan everything properly and admits she does not even really know where to start. That's why there are only the beds and a minimum of storage which does cover the essential needs but is far from comfortable as Annija's eldest needs a place to learn for school, the youngest needs to say goodbye to his baby bed and every child needs their "own territory".

After: a place to learn, to play and to rest

IKEA Interior Designer Zane believes that planning is key in this room as every last corner has to be maximised and used in the best possible way. One way to achieve it is to make use of the walls, e.g. use the height of the room. Zane has chosen a high bed (NB! Suitable only for children of 7+ years) that allows to plan a place for a desk underneath. A whole part of the wall is taken up by a practical storage solution from TROFAST series that can be combined with different drawers to make it more personal. Zane suggests using stickers with icons for the things inside the drawers for the children to easily see where to sort their things.

Added play area for the smaller ones

In every room, planning is essential: it is important to think about the different functions of the space and to divide it in areas accordingly. Here, a play area for the younger children is accentuated by a rug with playful dots. Zane advises to choose a children's table that also has some storage. A clever trick is to add boxes under the surface like here, to make it easier to keep everything close at hand and tidy.

Beds for children of different ages

One of the biggest challenges for parents of small children is that they grow so fast that you always need new furniture to adapt to the changing needs... but is this really always the case? No! You can choose furniture that will grow together with the child and thus serve for many years. This room is a great example how the same bed can be fitted for a toddler and a kindergarten-aged child. Adding some extra shelves is a way to personalise the solution so every child gets the feeling of an own space.

Adding the right accessories

However functional the interior, it needs some accessories to become really cosy. Here, adding some lighting to each bed, the dividing of the room in different areas for each child is enhanced, and wall shelves saving the floor space just wait to be personalised with toys and books.
"When renovating, first take a look at what you already have and what can be upcycled to fit the new interior. Sometimes, a fresh coat of paint is all that is needed to make furniture look like new. This is mostly the case with wooden furniture."
