Statistics show that in Latvia, one in three women experiences domestic violence at least once in their lives. This situation was exacerbated during quarantine, when many had to spend more time indoors. To help solve this social problem, IKEA is implementing the "Notice Violence" initiative. Renovation of the crisis centre "Mīlgrāvis" is part of this initiative as providing a safe and cosy home is a big step towards a brighter future for people that have experienced violence.
Before: involuntary utilitarian minimalism
Crisis centre "Mīlgrāvis" can accommodate up to 17 women and children. Financial strain is always felt bitterly and thus only the basic furnishing essentials like beds and wardrobes have been provided. However good care is taken for all items, most have already reached a stage where any repair would be pointless.
After: home away from home
A suitable living environment not only provides shelter, but also supports women emotional well-being and gives a peaceful and comfortable environment for children's development and well-being. Creating a feeling of a real home was the main motivation of this makeover as calm and homey atmosphere can go a long way in providing a turning point in the darkest moments of a person's life.
Clever solutions to maximise space
The size of a room is always the first to consider when contemplating a makeover. This time, small room has to fulfil many functions as a number of people have to fit in a very limited space. To maximise the available space, different space-saving solutions have been used, like storage under beds, bunk beds and other. In small rooms it is a good idea to store most things in closed solutions as it minimised the impression of cluttered space.
A very special project for IKEA Interior Designers
For IKEA Interior Designers Ieva and Renāte this is a most special makeover. The thought of helping people in crisis was a powerful driving force for them both. Their mission – giving the temporary accommodation an air of a true, warm home, a safe haven to regenerate and to gather strength for starting anew.
