In the last episode of the IKEA interior makeover show, we visit a big family in Riga. In this family, there are four children and a fifth on the way. A while ago, the family apartment was renovated, but, unfortunately, the renovation was not finished. Now the family would like to be prepared for the new family member who will join them at the end of December.
Simplicity is the key
The parents' bedroom surprises with an almost spartan interior. There are only a few pieces of furniture and no proper bed. As the room is quite small, the family is unsure about how to use the given space most efficiently and thus has chosen to go with simplicity. One of the elements that cannot be overlooked is the bright turquoise wall that makes the room even smaller visually.
When storage is limited
Both parents admit they would like to have some proper storage in their bedroom but are almost afraid to wish for it as the room is tiny. For now, there is a chest of drawers that is used both as a wardrobe and a bedside table. That is not enough even if all the things are kept in an excellent order.
The interior designer Kristīne
The IKEA interior designer Kristīne confesses the greatest challenge for this makeover – the tiny size of the room. This calls for a smart approach to fit all of the necessary things and, most importantly, a bed for the baby. The family wishes to have a harmonious atmosphere and no bright colours, so Kristīne will opt for a more natural palette.
Finding the right colour balance
It was clear from the start that the walls have to be repainted. Bold colours for big areas are good when you want to fill up a large space but play against you when the room is small, as it makes it even smaller visually. Kristīne has chosen a natural shade of beige that acts as a harmonious background. The furniture and accessories are also in different shades of beige, white and grey, creating a very calm, relaxing and cosy atmosphere. Keeping the room tone-in-tone, makes it seem bigger.
In high places
An unusual solution in this room is storage above the bed. This is a rather unusual place for storing things, yet small spaces call for unusual ideas. The designer chose to use kitchen cabinets instead of more traditional bedroom furniture, as kitchen cabinets are more spacious due to more depth. Small shelves are used as nightstands, feeing up more floor space and creating a more airy impression.
In the name of the cosiness
In the life of young parents moments of rest are rare and have to be treasured. What better way to celebrate life than with a nice breakfast in bed? A foldable table that can be put right on the bed is the best choice for these precious moments.
The all-natural way
Throughout the room, natural materials have been used. A jute rug, linen curtains, a wooden baby-bed. Using natural materials is a way of finding harmony. Earth-and-water shades in this room have a calming effect much needed in a bedroom.
A snug nook for the smallest one
Kristīne has managed to use every inch of space in this room. In many cases it was a tight fit. At the wall opposite the bed two spacious wardrobes have found their place and between them there is a cosy place for the new baby. The cot can be adjusted as the small one grows and it has three drawers for even more storage options. A playful detail is added with the colourful knobs.
