Meet the first heros of the TV project “Manas mājas ar IKEA”. In the family of four, the children room needed rearranging for it was suitable for one, but now it has to be a multifuctional living space for two. The girls' room in the making. IKEA interior designer Ieva is always full of ideas, and she is up for the task.
A room for two
Although the room was neat at the very beginning, it was not a first-grader's room and there was no area designated for the young sister. The girls are at different ages and their needs slightly differ, which makes this task challenging and exciting at the same time.
Kids grow up so fast. Furniture has to keep up
The girls are in the happy childhood phase, and the younger sister is still a baby, yet kids grow up so fast! This room should be ready for the rapid changes, preferably with adjustable furniture, which allows parents to save on new furniture. Such room must be multifunctional with a proper zoning and sufficient lighting.
Light and safety
Parents expressed a wish for a light and functional room. They noted that sometimes the morning light is too bright, waking up the girls just a little bit too early – this calls for a sunlight-blocking window solutions. Parents were hoping for furniture that is particularly suitable and safe for children and that would last for years despite the changing needs and interests of the growing children.
Interior designer Ieva
Ieva is an interior designer of brave and bold solutions. Her designs usually are daring with unusual ideas and unexpected combinations of colours. She prefers designing rooms for children, because it encourages the creativity to run wild. However, she is well aware of the responsibility it entails and a deep knowledge in child safety standards and children furniture range. For her, a good interior design is substantial, meaningful and functional.
Bright transformation
The room was decorated in light colours, which make the room look more spacious despite the fact that now there are twice as many things, since the room will be inhabited by two girls. There are smart hideaways – STUVA cabinets above the bed, wardrobe with airy mesh drawer baskets and interior organisers – for clothes in the wardrobe and TROFAST shelf for toys in the playing area. The safety of children was the top priority - note the lamps with heat protection, furniture with rounded corners and made of safe materials.
A lamp for every activity
The lighting in this room was diversified. Besides a ceiling lamp, which lights up the entire room, functional lighting was added for illuminating the place of a particular activity, such as the play zone with LÄTT table or a reading zone in the bed of the older daughter. Spotlights are more convenient, and the light needed for one girl will cause less disturbance to the other. The play zone offers loads of fun for the girls with FLISAT doll’s house, NYBAKAD kitchen and a children table for drawing or gathering for tea parties.
A safe haven for a book-lover
STUVA storage system is spacious enough for the clothes of both girls, and it consists of individual modules, which can be moved, rearranged and additional sections can be added whenever needed. The cosy BUSUNGE bed for the older daughter is extendable and the height is suitable for kids of this age. Sidebars of GULLIVER baby cot can be removed by adults as soon as the baby girl will be capable of climbing in the bed herself. Since both of the beds are adjustable and grow together with kids - as we like to say – they are a particularly economical choice, because parents will avoid the hustle of buying a new bed any time soon.
A motivational corner
MICKE desk is spacious, allowing the first-grader to arrange the learning spot to her desires and giving enough space for any of the parents to sit by Emily's side, if needed so. A convenient feature is the MICKE drawer unit with plenty of drawers, and to make it even more convenient – it is on wheels. ORFJALL swivel chair is in Emily's favourite colour – pink, for an additional motivation for doing homework. SKADIS pegboard combination is a smart solution for pining things and notes, and no more damaged walls by using pins for notes.
