Many of us have spent our childhood in the same room as our siblings, and many of us now have to figure out how to accommodate several children in the same room. A top issue in Ivanda's family of three children too. Brothers Arno and Otto live in a room that has not changed since they moved in. It's time for a change, but where to start?

Before: same room, different interests

The brothers' room is spacious enought, but when shared by two young men with very different interests, it starts to feel much smaller. In addition, in the current division, only one of the brothers can enjoy daylight. They would both like to have a layout that has enough space for each other's belongings and interests, but that is also more united as a whole.

After: a modern space for two personalities

After the makeover, the room has a whole new colour palette. Instead of the boyish colourful shades, the interior designer has chosen a muted palette for the walls and furniture, creating a backdrop for the artwork and favourite images. The space is brighter, no longer divided by a large shelf, and each of the two brothers have their own place to work and study, as well as their own sofa bed, which serves as a place to relax during the day and a comfortable place to sleep at night.

Modern and comfortable workspaces

When planning the layout, it was immediately clear that the brothers needed equal opportunities to study and work comfortably. Symmetry was therefore a particular consideration. A spacious desk with good lighting was planned for each of them, as well as enough space for their belongings.

Multifunctional storage solutions

Young people's rooms can safely use more unusual solutions, which is why Elīna boldly chose to create workspaces with elements from the BOAXEL collection. This collection, as the designer admits, may seem more suitable for storage, but it also looks very good in a youth room, and the shelves are spacious, sturdy, available in different sizes and adjustable to your heart's content. They can also be used for folders, boxes and baskets to organize smaller items.

Makeover in the sleeping area

The sleeping area has undergone a spectacular transformation. The brothers' beds are no longer located each in their own corner of the room, but are placed opposite each other, forming a seating area where they can spend time alone or with friends. By placing the low sleeping furniture near the window, the designer has ensured that the whole room is well lit.

A practical solution: sofabeds

It is very important for young people's rooms to be comfortable both for everyday use and for entertaining guests, as they like to spend time away from the rest of the family with their friends. Knowing this, this room is not designed with beds, but with sofa-beds, which make it quick and easy to have either a comfortable place to sit or a spacious sleeping area. This solution is particularly handy in rooms where every centimetre needs to be carefully planned to make sure there is enough space for everything.

Celebrating hobbies

As the owners of the room are creative, much thought has been given on how to show their creativity in the interior. Elīna has placed a shelf for records by one wall, and above it she has created a whole wall for framed pictures. The frames are not fixed to the wall, but are placed on picture ledges, which allow them to be swapped or replaced to one's heart's content, without having to think about holes in the wall.

"When furnishing a youth room, it's safe to do some research and look for furniture that might be designed for other rooms, but is perfect here too. You have to think creatively and be open to different solutions. I recommend modular furniture, as it can be easily converted or added to later. This is a trend for young people, as they want to change something more often, and it can also save money by not changing the whole interior, but just some parts of it."
