This time, the team of "Manas mājas ar IKEA" will visit a family in Jelgava – the largest town in the region of Zemgale, famous for its beautiful castle and the ancient heritage as the former capital of Duchy of Courland. Here, the large Ozoliņš family is at home, and the daughters have decided to surprise their parents by transforming their living room before the couples' golden wedding anniversary. This has to be done without the main heroes' knowing anything before the arrival of Normunds and the designer. Will the surprise be welcome? Will there be enough space to fulfil the parents' dream of a large dining table for the whole family? Will the mother have place for her beloved puzzles and the father – a comfortable corner for cosy moments in front of the TV? Let's find out!
Colour harmony
The living room in the couples' home is cosy and one of the main elements here is a whole collection of paintings, all with lilacs. Lilacs are very special to the owners, as, 50 years ago, they met at the time when these beautiful trees are in full blossom. The interior is made up in harmony of rosy, coral and deep brown colours, but the owners would actually like to have more light to fully use the daylight streaming in through the window.
A home for everybody
As in many living rooms, one of main elements here is a large and sturdy sofa. As for the dark brown colour, the owners say, it's more functional in a house with pets. They have a small dog who loves to hop on the sofa, so light colours are not really an option.
Time for a fresh start
In every room, there are things that can be expended, i. e., things that are not needed anymore and can be given to other family members or donated to people in need. In this room, there is a piano that evokes many fond memories of children and their first steps towards the understanding of the beauty of music but is not used anymore. Its close neighbour is a desk that has seen many late hours of tutoring master students as the mother still worked at a university.
Interior designer Līva
For Līva, work with interior design comes naturally as she has always been interested in art and design and she herself says that she enjoys every step of the creative process from the first exchange of ideas to seeing the ready solution. Līva loves the challenge of making peoples lives more comfortable and more beautiful. When creating a new room, she starts with exploring the whole home so that all rooms would always work as a whole. First the big picture, then the details.
A brave new beginning
After the transformation, the room is like a whole new world. The more traditional colour scheme and classic-style furniture has given way to a modern, light and airy interior that reminds of the best examples of Scandinavian minimalism. The warm wood colour of the floor is accented by the cooler palette of the new interior elements. The style is minimalistic yet personal and creates a calm impression that is soothing and refreshing at the same time.
The key to success: flexibility
As the room serves many purposes, it was important to find flexible solutions. Sofa bed GRALVIKEN and SVALSTA nest tables are good examples of how one piece of furniture can be used differently according to need. The sofa can be easily transformed from a great sitting place to a comfortable bed and the tables can be stacked together if more space is needed. When the whole family gathers at the grandparents' home, different activities take place so in this interior, there are many solutions to save space.
For the best family gatherings
For the dining area, the designer chose a classic solution – a set of table and dining chairs, bearing in mind that this area will be needed for large family gatherings with the fantastic Schnitzels
à la granny or a mouth-watering roast made by grandfather. The headpiece is made up by MOSSLANDA picture ledges that can be used for the most beautiful memorabilia and accessories. For large families, that only need a big table on special occasions, an extendable table is a very smart solution. Here, it is the LANEBERG extendable table with LEIFARNE chairs around it. The slender legs make the chairs appear lighter, creating an airy impression.
A store-it-all solution
Multifunctional rooms need smart storage solutions so that the space doesn't feel cluttered or too tight. PLATSA series have everything needed for a functional interior, from cabinets to TV benches. Extra chairs for guests can be hung on the wall so they don't take up any floor space. TERJE chairs have an opening in the back for hanging them.

Sit back and relax: a cozy corner for one
A POANG armchair is an affordable solution for a cosy TV corner and its smooth lines makes the design airy and light. The complementing footstool can be used both as an addition for more comfort and as an extra seating. Add cushions and throws for a more individual solution and feel free to relax any time you like.
